Dionea · Life Support
Privacy
Life Support is an app by Dionea for keeping your slips, loyalty cards, spending and shared bills in one place. This page says what it collects, where it goes, and what you can do about it. If something here is unclear, email support@dionea.app.
Who we are
Dionea is a small studio in South Africa. Dionea is responsible for your data in Life Support. Contact: support@dionea.app.
What we collect, and why
Your account
You sign in with Google or Apple. We get your name, email address and, from Google, your profile picture. We use them to identify your account and show your name to people you share a bill with. With Apple you can hide your email; then we get an Apple relay address instead.
Slips and photos
When you capture a slip, its photos are stored in your own Google Drive, in a "Life Support" folder. The app can only see the files it creates there, nothing else in your Drive. Our server keeps a working copy of each photo for faster loading, and removes copies that haven't been used for 14 days. What the app reads from a slip (store, date, items, amounts, card digits, notes) is stored in our database.
Reading slips with AI
To read a slip, the app sends its photos and text to an AI service. You choose which one in the app, using your own account with that service: OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, or another you add. That service's own terms and privacy policy then apply to what it receives. Free Google Gemini keys may let Google use what you send to improve its products, and people at Google may read it. Use a paid account if that matters to you. Some reading also happens on your phone and on our server without any outside service.
Loyalty cards
Card numbers, names and any photos you add are stored on your phone and in our database, so they sync between your devices. A copy also goes to your phone's widget storage so the home screen widget can show it. Store logos are fetched from Google's icon service using only the store's web address.
People, contacts and shared bills
You can add the people you share bills and IoUs with. If you match them to your phone's contacts, the app reads your contacts on your phone. For each person you choose to match, it sends that contact's name, phone number and email to our server. Nothing else from your contacts leaves your phone.
When you share a bill, anyone with its link can see that bill: its items, amounts and the names of the people at the table. They can claim items on it. Links don't show anything else in your account.
Bank emails
You can forward your bank's transaction emails to a private address the app gives you. Cloudflare receives the email and encrypts it at once with a key only our server holds, so it isn't readable while it waits. Our server decrypts it, checks the bank's signature, and stores the details: date, amount, merchant, account and card digits, and balance. For now we also keep the full email, encrypted, so we can improve how it's read; we'll stop once that's settled. You can get a new address at any time, which stops the old one at once.
Apple Pay payments
If you set up the Apple Pay shortcut, each Apple Pay payment sends the amount, currency, merchant and your Wallet card's name to our server. We use it to show the payment straight away and to match it with your bank's email. We never see your card number.
Your devices
For each signed-in device we keep a session with its name (like "iPhone · iOS 26"), its IP address and app details, so you can see and sign out devices. If you allow notifications, we store your phone's push token and send notifications through Expo's push service.
Crash reports
When the app or server hits an error, a report goes to Sentry, in the EU, with technical details of the error and your device. We don't attach your personal details to these reports.
Assistants you connect
You can connect an AI assistant, such as Claude, to your account. It can then read your slips, spending, tabs, people and loyalty cards, and add IoUs, settle-ups and people, for as long as you leave it connected. You can disconnect it in the app at any time.
What we don't do
We don't sell your data. We don't show ads. We don't use your data for anything except running Life Support for you.
Where your data is kept
Our server and database are in South Africa. Cloudflare carries traffic to it and handles bank emails on the way in. Slip photos are in your own Google Drive. Push notifications go through Expo, and crash reports go to Sentry in the EU. The AI service you choose receives the slips it reads. Some of these companies process data outside South Africa.
How long we keep it
We keep your data while you have an account. Things you delete are removed from the app straight away; a record that they were deleted stays so your other devices catch up. When you delete your account, everything in it is deleted from our database: slips, bills, people and tabs, cards, bank transactions and emails, connected services and every session. Files in your own Google Drive stay yours. Backups we take while maintaining the server live on the same server and age out.
Your rights
Under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), and laws like the GDPR where they apply, you can ask to see the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it, or object to how we use it. Most of this you can do in the app. For anything else, email support@dionea.app. You can also complain to South Africa's Information Regulator.
Age
Life Support is for adults, 18 and over, because it handles banking and payments.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and its date, and tell you in the app if the change matters.
